Ford Figo test drive

March 27th, 2010 by Rider | No Comments | Filed in Cars, General, Reviews

Yesterday I went to a ford show room to check on my friends Fiesta which had an accident. I had an idea of test driving a ford figo also. After going the fiesta i went to the executive and asked for test drive. The car the gave me was titanium the high end diesel model.

Though it looked small the interiors where spacious. Actually it looks more like swift from the inside. The two tone interiors and the dash board gave a sporty look to the car. Dash had the speedo, odo and all the modern consoles which we can find in a modern day car.

I had the car turned on, with out any difficulty i was able to reverse the car and join the traffic. Riding through the traffic was very easy with its power steering,  but the turbo lag some times bugged me as i was used to old model petrol engines. Believe me I was flooring the accelerator in prime traffic yet the car never gave any sign of aggression(try at your own risk). After one kilometre I got a free-way. I shifted the gear and floored the accelerator after the initial lag figo just vroomed to 100 km/hr. Now I can say this diesel engine much more refined than any petrol engine in its class( ikon diesel have vibes even having the same engine).

At 100km/hr I wanted to test the ABS and EBD, i just slammed the brakes vehicle speed got down from 100 to 25. It never skidded and the vehicle was totally controllable thanks for the ABS and EBD. AC had quick cooling effect unlike the ikon and it was quite chilling after some time.

From my point of view this is the best hatch back in its segment. It is a strong competition to the swift, indigo,Vista etc.

Reasons for oil pump failure

March 24th, 2010 by Rider | No Comments | Filed in General

what causes oil pump failure in automobiles.

By age an oil pump can have wear and tear and gradualy losing its abitlity to work at optimum levels.

If you dont change the oils at the right time interval it will lead to the accumulation of wear particulate, grime and sludge.

If the vehicle is driven constantly at low engine oil levels, the oil pump will feel more friction.

Monsoon precautions for your RE

March 23rd, 2010 by Rider | No Comments | Filed in Bikes, General

Monsoon maintenance for your royal Enfield bike… Rains have a tendency to mess with your bike … So some tips..

Change the engine oil if it is more than 1500 km old. The rain will add more water to your oil because of this the bike will not be able to dissipate heat as it should do. Water may also enter the oil pump which leads to more corrosion. A good thick oil means that the oil pump will be able circulate the oil to all the parts. Thicker oil also means that it stays there leaving no room for moisture.

Clutch case oil: If you are using engine oil for clucth oil, change to any thinner oil as the thicker oil increases the tendency for a clutch slip.

air filter: Old air filter already dirty by the summer added with the moisture and water spray will make your bike litteraly suffocate. Change the air filter, it will only cost 30 bucks.

contact breaker point and condenser: Clean the points, set the gaps to the standard setting and put some thing over the point cover. Clean and grease up your point plates and the auto advance mechanism behind the point plates.

controller cable: Change your controller cables. Oil all the new cables. A technique for oiling the cables, take a small plastic bag cut a hole which has the same diameter as that of the cable. Put the cable through the hole and tie to the bag so that it will not slip off. Pour the oil into the bag. The level of the oil should be enough to submerge the end of the cable inside.  Hang this whole assembly for on night. Do this to all cables.

Fork and steering: If you are not an expert in this field and you do not know what you are doing leave it to the mechanic.

Brakes: drum brakes may lock up during the rainy season. Since we have changed the cable the culprit this time would be the cams. Open the hub and dismandle the full brake setup along with the liners. Replace the liners if nessesary. You must also clean the innner side of the drum. While doing this check the bearings for wear and tear and play.

Chain: Clean the chain using some solvent. Put it back on the bike and rotate the wheel while spraying some oil on it. check the chain for any wear and tear. If it is too much worn out replace it.

Electricals: Check all the wires for cuts and cracks. Check the battery electrolyte level, top up if nessesary. Clean all the connectors with sand paper. cover the horn relay to prevent water from entering it. Carry a lot of fuse with you because blown fuse is a common problem.

Spark plug: Spark plug may get soaked during rain. So always have a spare spark plug with you.

Tips for you while riding in rain

1. Avoid riding in rain. If so necessary plan your trip so that you reach your destination within day hours.

2. If the visibility gets worse park in some safe-place. Dont park anywhere on the road, if possible park off the street on a higher ground.

3. While parking over  night choose an area which is clean and away from rodents because during the rain rodents take shelter under the hood and chew on the wires.

4. Do not tail gate any vehicles especially bikes as the grip on the road is
less when it is wet.
