AVL Diesel Engines for Motorcycles

December 2nd, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Bikes

AVL may not be a well known engine manufacturer, this privately owned Australian company is going to change the face of biking. You heard it right its diesel engines for two wheelers. AVL who has successfully made the engines for Mahindra Scorpio/Xylo and the royal Enfield thunder bird/electra is designing a turbo charged diesel engine for motor cycles.By diesel engines the first thing that may come to your mind may be the old taurus or any smoky and unreliable engines in the past. But AVL is in no mood for that ,they are designing tubocharged, lightweight, fuel injected or common rail systems for their diesel engines. Diesel engines have power in the mid rpm range so it will be suited for terrain roads than its petrol counter apart which work in the high rpm range. The problem of powerlag and diesel have been taken care by VGT (Variable Geometry Turbine) technology that adjusts the turbo blade angles to provide power in a smooth and steady manner.

The AVL research for diesel engine was conducted as a internal project. It the first high performance diesel engine designed for motorcycles in terms of styling and packaging. The engine specifications were fixed under consideration of the required performance, emission, styling and noise targets.Over all it is a very promising development in the field of motorcycles that can change the face of motorcycling.
